No Man Is An Island

“No man is an island entire

of itself,

Every man is a piece of

the continent

A part of the main”

John Donne -1624

From Devotions Upon Emergenced Occasions

The phrase expresses the idea that humans do badly when isolated from others and need to be part of a community in order to thrive.

This phrase was the starting point for a research if there can be a real connection in the absence of presence when we are isolated on our own island. What is does it feels like to be on your own island and how do your daily surroundings look? Is there a lifeline for a connection? Reflections about the past and the research within yourself. What will the future look like?

An island is also called an “eye” sometimes and as the camera is my eye, my blindspot has the shape of my island of isolation. I am my blindspot, but will I ever escape from this so called island?

Series 2022

Video “What is the present day?” is a video log about being isolated on your own island. Which day is it? What are the views? How does time passes by? What do we long for most while being stranded? Is there a chance to escape, a new way of life visible on the horizon? This video is part of the project No Man Is An Island.

Book The Research Within. A collection of research about this project and at the same time a sort of diary about being isolated on your own island. Assembled with left over prints, cuts offs from photos and notes I have made during this time. As part of questioning and understanding my own process and in relation to others on a distance.
